I'm launching this thread a bit early.  Stay tuned for Wednesdays FP...

What are some of your theories of attraction as they pertain to flash in flies?

cool topic Matt,

sometimes they want it, sometimes they don't...
i try to have a version of both, flashy and not, for just about all patterns.
often, a little Glister dubbing or Flashabou or even just a wire ribbing instead of thread or mono here and there will make the difference but in my home waters the toned-down flies usually do it best, at least for the native fish.
from my gathering this seems to be more of a geographical thing.

cheers,
marc

It has been observed that on quite a few of our most popular waters, that get fished heavily, that flash or any kind of other bling deters the fish from taking.

The "classic" czech nymph, say a caseless caddis grub job with a matt shell back, is gaining on popularity again, after a tungsten bead head nymph craze.

Anyway, an interesting pattern of prefernce can be observed on the more exploited waters.

Savage,

Your theory falls into the "fish want something different" category.

So, why not Czech nymph a big and extrememly flashy fly instead of a dull one or a small one with just a bit of flash?

Marc et al,

You mention Glister and Flashabou.

What are some other flash products people are using?

I love Flashabou.  And Angel Hair.

I think fish are scared of UV Ice dub, Rob.

That crap isn't on the Homemade Tattoo is it?

Lee, I love Angel Hair.  I run my fingers through it, smell it, brush it, tie with it...
