i dont like to smash barbs of the hooks when using the hooks with heavy tungsten bead - the debarbed hook tend to snap easy after some underwater dapping onto the stony bottom, much prefer barbless with the tungstone stuff. It happens sometimes but only a very few barbless may tend to slip from my RW foam boxes to start an orgy usualy these are the ones with the heavier/bigger tungstone beads.

Paul,
What boxes do you use? I have no issues with them falling out of my C&F slot type boxes as they grip the bend. I also try to avoid falling down banks too.

Large C&F style box with swing leaf will take a shit load of flies Paul, how many do you carry on an average trout fishing day?

I carry all of them, even when fishing the salt - you never know! I was dry fly fishing for Spanglies with hoppers in Exmouth.

QUOTE On a serious note though, I'd fish barbless exclusively if all patterns were available this way. Even after pinching the barb down, there can sometimes be a tiny snag left that catches on release. I pinch all my barbs, but you're right, heard a story about a fish cop in Canada who used to run a silk cloth down the hook point to check it, & if it snagged, you were done! Bit severe, but makes the point.
I also haven't found many barbless I like, (some have very fine points & are not that strong), so I de-barb for all the reasons above. And taking a fly out the dog is a hell of a lot less hassle.
Used to see plenty of ripped lips (no maxiillary bones), in busy rivers in Canada where the guides shook the fish off the fly, presumably all on barbless, so it's not just the hook, how you handle the fish does play a part in their well-being, we all know the rules.
