Re: What the fluff?
Hi John, Is that 2cm tied in the middle or 2cm long? Site isn’t currently loading for me. Cheers, Paul Hi Paul, Two cms long. I'm not sure as to the reasons for the coloured leader. The fly rule change was copied from the Australian rules. We see colour differently so to allow any colour is a good ...

Re: What the fluff?
I always use a fly for accuracy training and fluff for distance training. Train as you play.
I agree Paul, about size and the line weight. For accuracy casting, adjust both leader tippet length and diameter to the fly size and the wind conditions. It's not a one size fits all.

Discussion with Phil Blackmar
Congratulations to both Phil and Paul on an excellent video. Great topic, great insights and great discussion.
Really enjoyed it and look forward to more of Phil's thoughts on casting and sport in general.
Thanks,
John

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Hi John, see for instance [1], page 66, table 3, figures for competition casts (trout distance/sea trout distance). Peak speed rod ~7m/s (translation), ~15rad/s (rotation), haul ~10m/s You would need to multiply the rad/s for rotation with the effective lever length, I'd guestimate something around...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Thanks for your reply Vince, I wanted to verify agreement that we instruct the skills necessary to perform a technique. That could be the skill needed to perform the backcast, the skill needed to perform the drag free layout on the water or the skill needed to perform the lifting of the rod tip in o...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Hi John I also presume the focus of instruction is the specific skills needed to perform that technique. In my experience p, a typical student who is not a novice will give you an objective such as “I want to get better at dry fly”. Regards Vince Thanks Vince, apologies for the number of questions ...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
I got these from googling sport technique. " the specific way in which a sports skill is performed" and "In sports, technique refers to the specific way in which a sports skill is performed" Maybe you have another, I haven't got another definition John but would have answered si...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Hi John, Might be off-topic here, That's very true, the rod is a flexible lever and we only throw the line, although on occasions I have thrown the rod as well. However the direct contact we have is with the rod only. We create movement in the body that is transferred to the rod through the...
