Re: Evaluating the Haul

Below I illustrated the relationship between haul speed and hands separation speed Merlin, I too have found that the hand separation speed is a good proxy for the haul speed on a forward cast where the haul is in line with the rod. What does that plot look like on a back cast where the stripper gui...

Re: Evaluating the Haul

With simplifying assumptions, and for a FC only, the haul distance may equal (in value) 2r (and not r). Merlin, I don't understand what assumptions you are making to come up with a haul distance difference of 2r on a forward cast. If r was equal to .4 m that would give a haul distance difference of...

Re: Evaluating the Haul

Here is the haul speed curve that is calculated in Tracker by taking the derivative of the haul distance curve shown above for Lasse's back cast.

Re: Evaluating the Haul

the difference in haul distance is approximately equal to the "diameter" of the (more than) a half circle: Merlin, Could you plot a comparison of the actual haul distance measured in those two cases? I don't see where circular paths (half circle) enter into the actual haul distance (or it...

Re: Evaluating the Haul

I realize that mathematically speaking, using a 2D representation underestimates the haul distance but overestimates haul speed by comparison to 3D. and Wouldn’t it be the case that if it underestimates distance then it also underestimates speed? Paul, No. As is generally the case, Merlin has it ri...

Re: Evaluating the Haul

I do not think it could have an influence larger than 15% to 20% on results. Merlin, Assuming the z offset in the stripper guide plane and the haul hand plane is nominally constant and equal to the .5m width of the shoulders, you can get an idea of how that added fixed distance would impact the hau...

Re: Measuring the Haul

I’m not sure why Gordy keeps bringing up the GF technique in this thread either. Walter, Because his technique captures some of the stripper guide's speed contribution to the overall haul speed while an in-line haul direction where the haul hand is moving in line with the rod alignment on a forward...

Re: Measuring the Haul

I have yet to see a video of it where he has worked out the biomechanical issues of the forward cast. Walter, This was posted in another thread, but most of the videos I have seen show him releasing the line on the forward cast. From a bio-mechanical standpoint all he had to do was let go of the li...

Re: Measuring the Haul

The misunderstanding Günter had, was that he believed hauling to big the big factor in line speed, not rod movement. Bernd, And I think that is the answer to your question about why we can cast longer distances with a standard rod hand movement that will produce higher angular velocity values than ...

Re: Measuring the Haul

So this hauling style is promoting an early haul, one that happens before rotation. Graeme, It appears to me he is still moving his haul hand away from the movement of the stripper guide after the rod has passed the vertical and is near the expected MAV point. haul_near_MAV.jpg Since the haul speed...
