Re: Line configuration affect on rod
Hi, I remember I had a different opinion on this; also because I tried different line configurations with (almost) the same mass. For an overhead cast they feel very similar to me during the acceleration phase (I've tried to keep the fly leg straight). The inertial mass of the two line configuration...

Re: Question for the FFI MCI mentors and examiners
Hi Paul,
I'd have to try, so the task as stated would be impossible. I'm guessing ticking happens for the large loop size (?)
But have they not done a test run before writing the rules down ?
Greetings,
Torsten

Re: Question for the FFI MCI mentors and examiners
Hi Lasse, just curious, is this task impossible because you can't measure the size or because you can't create the stated loop size? How do they measure the size? Video analysis? Feet to fluff means much less then 50ft fly line? Greetings, Torsten Do anyone have a passing clip of task 2 in the MCI t...

Re: glass vs graphite
Hi, well, neither Sage nor Winston seem to have glass rods in their portfolio, at least I've found none. Winston would be an example for softer rods. Glass seems to be a niche for smaller companies like Epic for instance. I like their business model, seems to be quite clever. The risk associated wit...

Re: glass vs graphite
Hi, I'd just like to mention (again) that rod stiffness is only partially related to the material - you can create the same action, overall stiffness of a rod with both materials. Just the diameter of the glass-blank has to be higher. The disadvantage of a glass rod with the same action is the highe...

Re: glass vs graphite
I don't know what overlining is, because the number printed on the rod is not determined by objective data. I can use a different line than recommended and sometimes I do that. Typical use case are for instance shooting heads, like AFFTA +1 or +2 for me. The TFM site looks pretty much like marketing...

Re: glass vs graphite
Hi, funny, I'd say two decades ago glass fly rods were considered inferior, the retro-trend appeared later - I think this was very clever marketing. Still it seems to be pretty much a niche product, most sold fly rods are from CF, glass seems to be more attractive for the hobby rod builders. When a ...

Re: Measuring the Haul
Hi Walter, off-topic: just a quick comment, I agree with Paul that backhand casting is a very useful skill and it's of course important for my fishing (I'm actually surprised that Bernd doesn't need it). The EFFA differentiates between the backhanded cast and the back cast; I'd use the same terminol...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides
Hi Paul, I'd say the difference between a back cast and a backhand cast is how you're positioning your shoulders. E.g. backhand you could stand square to the target, I'd say (for me) this is better for accuracy. Disadvantage is the constrained rod hand travel. For distance I'd choose the backcast, b...
