Re: Hand position and hauling

Paul, I don't think that is it. I recognized this while I experimented with different ways of hauling (approximently) directly down the blank. If I kept my hands where the separation was constant, but my line hand was in front, the haul was far inferior. All things about the same, but my rod hand in...

Hand position and hauling

Folks, Can anyone explain why it seems to work better, on the delivery stroke, if the haul doesn't begin until the rod hand is in front of the hauling hand? It shows up occasionally on some of the videos of distance casting, and it has been mentioned a few times. So I have been playing with it. And ...

Re: glass vs graphite

Does an 8 wt carbon fiber rod bend less than a modern fiberglass rod cast the same distance with the same line, fly and loop? Phil Phil, You did not ask me but I'll pitch in my 0.02 anyway... To that question I would answer generally "yes", but I think it goes beyond materials. CF rods ca...

Re: glass vs graphite

Graeme,

Thanks! I love to irritate some of my friends... like yelling "trout set" when they miss all their fish. Now I'm going to correct them with "carbon fiber" every time they say "graphite". :yeahhh:

I expect years of entertainment from that one. :D

Re: OSD

HI John, Could you supply a video of a cast where the elbow goes behind that line across the shoulders? Wouldn't that really hurt? I watched the videos above, and they are all non "US" casters except Steve, and I don't see that in any. To me, while their elbow may open behind the body it s...

Re: OSD

For me, one of a few of the basic distinctions between OSD and 170 is bracing the rod butt against the forearm. I don't do it on OSD but do on 170. But, Lasse, above in the video, it looks like you brace on OSD also??? (I'll try that!. Bracing is a very key ingredient, for me, when fishing with rods...

Re: OSD

[quote=James9118 post_id=80432 time=1710849825 I agree, and perhaps that's why I keep mentioning it. To me, one of the key discriminators between the two is the force input, with the '170' being much later than OSD. When someone has cast OSD all their lives, making the transition to the force input ...

Re: How often do your students practise/train?

I hear guides constantly complain about "good" trout anglers who cannot make the casts you mention when they try the salt. Trout strike…☹️ Can’t stop myself. Stoats, A gentleman I fish with frequently has the same problem. Translation: we fish frequently - he always trout strikes. And I n...

Re: How often do your students practise/train?

It’s amazing that people will spend thousands of dollars to go on a SW fly fishing trip, but not be able to make fast accurate shots or cope with the wind. Good numbers Rickard! Cheers, Paul Paul, I see the same thing but quite the opposite. :upside: I hear guides constantly complain about "go...

Re: 170

I find it curious that we have specific terms for things like mends, reach, and curves... for the delivery stroke only! As if the same "things" can't happen on the back cast. When they do, they are commonly just called tracking faults, because they are almost always done accidentally. But ...
