Re: Structuring multiple lessons

I try to get my SW guys into the 110-115’ distance mark. Forehand and backhand. I think that technique level allows you to make 80’ shots into the wind. So one performance level above Lefty’s suggestion. It’s just technique and a measure of it. Carry is a better one for me. Somewhere in the 80 ft ma...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

That’s a good question Torsten and I don’t know. I certainly try to keep it a fairly low key because I’m as busy as I want to be. This week was 10 lessons which is typical. Some weeks I do 15 and feel like I’m working too hard. I do have other things to do! I could go full time, which would look lik...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Do you also include how to stand up on the bow of a pitching and rolling boat without weight shifting?
Of course.

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

The previous comments I’ve made on these threads refer to how you teach “what” you teach. Historically the 170 and other distance casting techniques have been taught using direct instruction and highly internalised cueing, it’s usually instructor feedback dependent and error reductive. As you have ...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Yet you only gave Mark 3-6 months for the same task?
:D :D good point! But that’s not all I teach them!

I don’t know about cost/benefits but most of my students are SW anglers. They seem to be the ones searching for help.

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

So you’re possibly suggesting that we shouldn’t teach saltwater fly anglers taking shots because most anglers fly fish for trout? It’s funny that’s actually one of the main criticisms of the FFI instructor program in that it doesn’t properly represent or teach SW fly fishing skills and there was eve...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

It is. But isn’t the question then how to teach these? That’s the interesting part.

Cheers, Paul

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

Yep they are not very difficult there, at least nothing like I have read about. It’s a different permit sub species too I believe and grows to the teens of pounds. It’s a cracking fishery however. Pressure obviously changes the behaviour of the fish. I can’t wait to fish and sail those waters north ...

Re: Struggling

Hi Gary, What holds most people back in distance is their backcast. It’s either not straight, or it’s open and the power has been applied through the stroke and not nearer the end with delayed rotation. To cast another ten feet in front you probably need to carry another ~7’ behind (assuming a full ...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

It sounds awesome to me. I love sight fishing shots. Big fish, tropical climates, feeding the fish. The vast majority of my students come to me because they have a similar challenge and are driven to make shots. If you are going to drop 10K on a destination trip then you want to be putting the shots...
