That’s correct and you can’t put as much effort in. It feels lighter to pick up 5KG compared to 10KG.

Re: Haul timing
Hi Phil, I think this will also depend on the rod. Since the haul retards/controls rod tip as it unloads, a very aggressive haul acceleration on a soft rod can cause a tail. With a stiffer rod I think a higher rate of acceleration is better, so the percentage difference between would be greater, ie ...

Re: Performance levels
Yes of course. Just giving mine. However many casters come to my lessons self described as intermediate level. And I’ve always agreed with their assessment.

Re: Help for a newbie please?!
I like it. Ok game one Accuracy. You can ignore the tackle requirements in the attached document. It’s there to give an idea of the rules. Also you can use 2’ hoops and not three concentric ones. This will make your practise more interesting because you can hit targets and score yourself. All line a...

I think intermediate are autonomous casters too. It’s just that we can make them much better.

Re: Minimum Power and Whomp-it ?
Hi David, Lift and flip for me is utilising the wrist by blocking the forearm. Momentum transfers. Done well that’s a very effective casting technique. Steve Rajeff does this for his backcast in competition. I think it’s something to get very good at as a default fishing backcast. Blocking and flipp...

Re: Performance levels
I have quite a large bandwidth at Intermediate level, Torsten. Mainly because I teach them differently to beginners. For one thing they are generally much more experienced anglers – and I think we can get to Intermediate level of casting without coaching. It’s not easy but is possible, so they may n...

Re: starting from close in?
Hi Red, With say 10-12’ of flyline still out, raise the rod tip to bring the flies to the surface. You can dance them on the surface (dibbling) and if you change direction this can induce a take from any following fish. From this position you can then roll cast the line either into the air or first ...

Re: AFFTA and rod loading stuffs
Good we agree. If it feels lighter it means we are doing less work. Consequently, to a point, a flexible rod allows us to do more work than a rigid one.The rotation feels lighter on the stiffer rod.

Re: AFFTA and rod loading stuffs
Hi Paul Interesting points. I’d be curious to see a comparison of MAV achievable with a soft vs stiff rod casting the same line. I’d think the longer effective lever would exert more force on the caster and slow rotation. Perhaps, however, the stiffer rod allows one to overcome the initial inertia ...
