Re: How often do your students practise/train?

There has to be an additional instructor’s step. You see the body movement you want to adjust, or preferably “pattern”, the obvious thing is to tell the student how to move/ what movement to change. But we don’t want to do that, instead we need to create or offer an external cue that gives the resul...

Re: glass vs graphite

My first flyrod was a fibreglass Pfleguer. Around 1980. I still have it in Hungary. I haven’t checked in a while but it might still be vibrating.

Re: glass vs graphite

There is a strange thing that’s happened. Beginners struggle to cast very stiff rods. (I don’t know what Lasse makes of that but no doubt it is psychological for him and not physical) however if you put a very stiff rod in your average caster’s hands then many can’t form serviceable loops. Even some...

Re: How often do your students practise/train?

I’m not aiming my videos for instructors but for students. I think what instructors look for and what students look for are and should be different. That’s often why internal cues are given. The Six Steps for example, will lead to internal cues if we are not careful. I agree we need to study the stu...

Re: How often do your students practise/train?

I believe over the next decade we will really move things forward. I know a decade is a long time. But there will become a point when this happens. I think that the next set of videos will make a difference. This sport needs drills and exercises. Not everyone enjoys creating them, I understand that,...

Re: Hand position and hauling

Hi Gary, I think it’s a pretty significant difference. The effective haul is the speed of the line being pulled through the tip ring. If the rod hand is moving towards the line hand then it is shortening the effective haul. If it is moving away from the line hand it is increasing it. There are many ...

Re: glass vs graphite

Beginners can tell the difference between rod too. They might not get the same out of them that an expert casters can, but they certainly have preferences. I’m no expert in fine cuisine or fine wines, but I certainly have preferences.

Totally shagged. FP in the making

Re: Hand position and hauling

Hi Gary, it’s because the hands are not separating until the rod hand is in front of the line hand. I teach to rotate the body to or beyond the square line to achieve this. It can be trained ground to ground, which makes it easier to learn.

Cheers, Paul
