Re: Suggested method for measuring lines
Gordy unfortunately I have no data to support fly lines nowhere the details you have done. I have calculated some sinking line densities and also heavy floating line densities which I also have took diameters. It is not unusual that ovalization is more than 5% and that diameter fluctuates along the ...

Re: Suggested method for measuring lines
No I don't Gordy! Perhaps diameter measuring is good enough for our purpose but the lines I have measured diameters have been oval and have had quite big differences in short length. I would like to know it is because line machine "nozzle" is difficult to adjust or does the line expand whe...

Re: Rear taper on shooting head
I think a rear taper has some advantage when line head weight distribution comes more front biased so head can be longer.

Re: Suggested method for measuring lines
As you can put a light downward pressure on the scales through the stiffness of the line, I simply hung in a clothing pin with the mark of the head length on the scale. This also prevents relieving weight by lifting a portion of the line off the scale. I weigh all my fly lines (first 30 ft, but thi...

Re: Suggested method for measuring lines
I have marked 1000mm and 1500mm lengths from the table corner and holding line between left hand index finger and thumb I put index finger to the table edge and thumb nail is aligned to length mark while pulling line thru right hand fingers the length is very fast to measure.

Re: Suggested method for measuring lines
Weighing is better than taking diameters because we cast weight in the first place and diameters usually change and line can be oval. Yes diameter has some effect to wind resistance but it effects weight because line densities are not constant. When length is measured first and then line is coiled a...

Re: Rod deflection and acceleration
Short single hand rods don't but long double hand rods might. When rods evolve lighter they are easier to accelerate line using lever effect and when some bend is good to make line loop narrow a light rod needs to be softer because lighter rod moment of inertia cause less bend.

Re: DHD for ISW Surf Casting
Paul you did talk with Mike in Cumbria WC. Mike was wearing a wax coat which was well worn out :) I did use 15ft rod when I began salt water DHD but it was poor in strong wind and hard work to cast 650gr line. Lately I have cast 700gr...800gr shooting heads using 10ft.Spinning rod which is rated for...

Re: Progressive rod?
Here Tim Rajeff explains and show how rod span change depending rod action. Tip action rod allows us to use wider casting stroke because its span shortens more wihout tip "lagging behind" too much so line acceleration efficiency is better.

Re: Casting accuracy / rod length
I bought NexTackle 11ft #2 four piece blank (about 45 euros from ebay/Bulgaria) which CCS at full 3310mm are IP58g, AA65 with an idea to have soft and very slow action accuracy rod and at 2750mm length from rear it is IP116g, AA50 and test casting with only taped guides I feel it has potential to be...
