Fly Line Database

Absolutely you need total head weight/length to make any sense of what you are casting in the real world. Wouldn't some emails to the tech support depts of the major companies gather this information more easily than weighing hundreds of lines? I know Rio provided me with the 30' and total head weig...

Casting a heavy line with a small versus a big fly

When dragging a large wind resistant fly, wouldn't the line speed slow more quickly so by the end of the backcast the line might be carrying less momentum (or have transferred less momentum to rod leg tension) when the caster starts forward........and might this result in a lighter "feel" (at least ...

Recommendation for flats shoes?

For what it is worth, I just spent a week doing some serious flats walking (sand and coral) in the Orvis Xmas Island flats booties with added insoles and wet wading socks. The soles show no wear. They are light, drain well, and sand/mud intrusion was acceptable. They are, however, narrower and with ...

Recommendation for flats shoes?

The Simms Zipit 2 neoprene boots have a wide forefoot and, when used with their (or someone else's) after market wader insoles, are quite comfortable. The soles are a soft rubber, however, and wear quickly if you walk big distances. If you plan to fish out of a boat and wade occasionally they should...

Why does the 170/stopless work

Why wouldn't it work? There is an acceleration (with turnover), then a deceleration (and tip travel below the path of highest line velocity) which creates a loop as the faster moving line passes the decelerated line... What else is needed for a cast?

I think that you need to finish you conversation with Merlin about energy, momentum, forces and tension. You seem to be confused about some of the concepts.

Upward Force from Form Drag

And back to the earlier question I posed, is this a fair summary of the forces acting at moving frame itself? That is, I'm not asking what is happening at the extremities of the line, but at the boundaries of the frame . This should be a "yes or no" answer. If no, please show other forces acting. T...

Upward Force from Form Drag

Hi George Let’s see if we can progress step by step. Several scientists have used the approach of splitting the line into tiny pieces to write a full set of equations allowing estimating the behavior of the line, but you need sophisticate software to get the results (this corresponds to the graphic...
