Improved retention as well, if they solve it themselvesIn many ways it is an excellent example of what happens if instructors manipulate constraints to create drills or practice routines where a caster has to problem solve.

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
I agree with everything you say Paul, I’ve never had a student that I could take straight into the specific exercises, which is why it needs a longer term training vehicle. Standing hoops you say? https://vimeo.com/411131326 I made that out of an old coarse fishing knotted mesh keepnet, the ring is ...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
I also forgot to mention that the point of my practice session video with my dog in was not to hit the target, but to keep the line off the ground after landing the fly. This is part of the skills required to deal with drag in pocket water, ideally you are set up a long leader for that reason. I’m a...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Morning Paul Constraints and complexity are 2 different properties, it’s mixing learning and performance. Constraints are designed to lead the student towards a particular solution rather than make a task more difficult and I think that there’s value in building any constraints around the fishing pr...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Almost all of my teaching is for saltwater, but every once in a while someone asks for trout stuff. And I have to admit I'm usually flustered on how to even begin. Usually it is from saltwater folks who have made their first trip up to the mountains and have been humbled by the "tiny fish you ...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
I think much of this is true, Mark. I’d love to see an assault course crazy golf style flycasting game. That would be fun. This of course means that there are more constraints and not less. We call that fishing around here, although we might make a bid to host the World Fly Casting championship IMG_...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
I agree with your performance definition Paul and I include non dominant hand casting as well, I’m using it more and more in teaching as well as fishing. For me, I want slack at the fly and with a dry I stick the longest tippet on I can manage and still hit the target area under the prevailing condi...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
The dog seems impressed! Sadly, no longer with us. It was too hot for him but he wouldn’t go indoors until I did. How do you structure your presentation casting lessons, Vince? Do you teach using key casts or is it all line manipulation without cast names? Very much the latter. I prefer to set typi...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons
Not really John, I can look at any number of fly casting championship videos and see a closely bound objective generating a narrow range of solutions. You know what task and what equipment you will use every single time you compete. You will never be handed a 10’ #5 rod and line with a team of 3 bea...
