Structuring multiple lessons

Great article Paul. I think that what we are teaching is increasing the range of controlled movement and stimulating the grey matter with differential learning. The subject material is almost immaterial, I took a beginner through roll cast to snake roll this weekend in consecutive steps to unfreeze ...

Re: Line configuration affect on rod

I suspect 99% of the guys casting a fly rod have no concept of the need to get the line ‘positioned right’, nor even what ‘right’ entails. It is just not emphasized (at least from what I’ve seen/read) as an essential concept. It seems, rather, that instruction is aimed at making it happen indirectl...

Re: Unproven

I guess I’ll have to rename my variant to “Elk Hair Sedge made with deer hair” :D

Re: Unproven

He will have to live on seaweed, you can’t catch potatoes in the sea.

I name all my flies even if I haven’t fished them. I’ll call them “pile of shite”, “hope it doesn’t fall to bits” and “needs more glue”.

Re: Fly casting paradox (number 1)

Re: Step up drill

Maybe I’m misunderstanding but apart from the transition between different angles, why does the cast break the 180 rule. If I have understood the description correctly, it is a drill Mark put me through as a mentor albeit at 40ft to increase my range of control.

Re: glass vs graphite

What line weights do you fish Torsten? In #5 upwards it has always been nymph or cone head strikes that caused a rod break for me. #3 and below it has been due to sticking the tip into the tree or a bank, the cf tips are very fine diameters. I’ve never broken a glass rod, nor heard of one broken. Re...
