Line config for learning “high and hot” PU

I asked a friend how to train for a “high and hot” pickup backcast. It was suggested I take an old 8 wt. shooting line and cut off the first 40 feet, then attach mono for the “running line.” Then, with my TCX 906, progressively pick up line until a few inches of the overhang is out of the rod tip. I...

Re: Single handed distance roll casting

We saw one vid of Nick’s roll cast on ice on p. 47. What we didn’t see is another vid he shared with me of the roll cast on ice in which you could see his arm-hand movements. It had very quick translational acceleration of only about 1.5 feet (or so) followed by the angular acceleration at the end, ...

Thanks. I’ll remember SSFF and practice that myself for awhile.

Re: Single handed distance roll casting

Bernd, in Macauley’s video, I notice on the wide loops that RSP0 is much further back. He says he’s starting faster and there is no where to accelerate at the end. I don’t understand that. Also, doesn’t that more-open starting position itself put more strain on the rod thus bending it earlier? If th...

Re: Single handed distance roll casting

I use a wide arc to narrow down the loop, if I’m trying to thread the line through tight spaces, much like Steve Rajeff described in your quote. Vince Vince, in your opinion, is the saying “Wide arc, wide loop; narrow arc, narrow loop” too simplistic? I’ve focused on a narrow arc in the roll cast t...

1. Pool noodle for pantomime, like Dayle Mazzarella. 2. The Walter Wedge (Jonathan Walter) with his instruction of “Don’t drop it. Don’t crush it” It’s cut from a pool noodle and is Great for wristy folks who need to bring their wrist under control. 3. Then there’s the simplest of roll cast tools: a...

Re: Single handed distance roll casting

Drag at the beginning is also what I’ve been taught, though my technique needs a lot of refinement. I think Mac Brown would also argue that the velocity imparted by late rotation also is important. So whether you can tease one out as being more important than the other?? I don’t know, but it’s a rab...

Re: Single handed distance roll casting

Good roll, Nick. With ice there is virtually no friction, I.e. tension, on the line. It’s all technique.

Re: Habits and Motivation

So many great thoughts that led down the deer trail to B&A casts. Bernd, I totally agree with being enthusiastic. I’ve been impressed by Haye’s enthusiasm and humor. It inspires me to try to find ways to teach using humor. When teaching one women’s group, I was trying to teach them to side arm c...
