Re: Stop and SLP discussion

Interesting discussion. Are their certain parts or techniques of the cast that are easier to teach or explain by feel rather than cast mechanics? Do some students respond or understand better by teaching feel rather than cast mechanics?

Re: Alexandra

It has become a favorite of mine to swing for trout. I tie the wing with peacock sword fibers rather than herl, but it is difficult to find really long sword fibers for bigger versions. It also works well as a steelhead fly. I think the sword fibers have more of a sheen than the herl.

Re: Rio Windcutter Spey Line

My WC Versitip has a mid extension that could be either float or intermediate and then the different 15’ tips from float to sink. I usually use the float mid and then whichever tip that is appropriate. I never do away with the mid and attach tips directly to the body because I prefer the length and ...

Re: Rio Windcutter Spey Line

I have used a Windcutter versitip spey for quite a few years and like it for shallow to five foot depth water when steelheading in Ohio. These rivers aren’t particularly deep and of moderate currents. When it gets to mid winter and there is ice and slush and below freezing conditions I switch to ska...

Bruce Richards video

Really enjoyed the interview with Bruce Richards.
His comments about textured lines explains my experience with them. Great for shooting line into short to medium range casts but little advantage over smooth lines for distance when the head itself is carried outside the tiptop.

Re: Haul direction

I noticed in videos here that distance casters, rather than moving the hauling hand all the way up to the rod hand before the start of the forward cast, they are bringing the hauling hand back and the rod hand together during the beginning of the forward stroke. Then the hauling hand sort of leads t...

Re: Haul direction

That up/down haul that I was using was so short that I was doing exactly what you mentioned. The haul was in the middle of the forward stroke rather than at the end. I definitely feel now that the haul comes much later in the stroke. Just a revelation to feel the smooth increase in line speed at the...

Haul direction

I have always done the double haul in an up and down motion. Paul's video on hauling forward and back rather than up and down really changed my casting. I got a definite increase in line speed, but the biggest change for me was that I no longer throw tailing loops when reaching for distance. I am gu...

Re: Pop Quiz

if you have a skagit head then a Perry poke can be used under any condition and in any direction that I can think of with restricted backcast room.
