Re: The Triple or Check Haul

Have you digitized the retro loop data yet? The more data we have to compare the better. OK, first I zoomed in to where the action was, looking at the 1-frame interval traces in your file: Gordy's-retro-loop-prop-data.jpg I roughly drew simplified straight-line interpretations (black dotted lines) ...

Re: The Triple or Check Haul

Hi Gordy It seems you have begun to see the issues around jumping from tracking the stationary rod tip to a falling line marker, and from two line markers to the fluttering fly. In my experience, the data from line markers is more comfortably consistent. It is when we jump between tracking different...

Re: The Triple or Check Haul

That is what Tracker says about the digitized values for the rod tip. Hi Gordy In and out. The problem with your base data is not so much the noisy digitisation, but that you jumped from one marker to the next on the same tracks. Being in different positions in space, and different things (rod tip ...

Re: The Triple or Check Haul

Hi Gordy I assumed you misnomed as you clearly showed negative rod leg "speed" on the same chart. So you use negative rod leg "speed" values, by dint of some math tricks to calculate a loop travel speed, which by definition can't be negative. But it's OK that the rod leg speed is negative because yo...

Re: The Triple or Check Haul

That expected loop speed value does not go negative as it did before just using the x velocity values. Hi Gordy It is a good thing that your re-worked curves now yield a non-negative loop travel velocity, in line with observation. However, if we are still talking about the same cast, the time of th...

Re: Covered topics /how it works

Thanks, Lasse!

Have you ever seen morphing where the leading curve of the loop grows bigger?

Re: The Triple or Check Haul

the loop travel velocity does not stay close to zero and diverge with the PB. It is clear that some I would say "inertial" condition is not met. Hi Merlin That run's loop travel goes negative because the fly leg response to the pullback is unrealistically low and slow. Anyway, that's where I would ...

Re: Covered topics /how it works

I roughly agree 😉 try laying the line on the ground behind you, fully straight, make a slow forward cast throwing what starts as a super tight loop, and watch it morph bigger at the end of the cast. Hi Lasse Do you know of footage showing small to big morphing? I would love to analyse that. All the...

Re: The Triple or Check Haul

All works till the PB starts, then the trends differ: single stage process, limited rise in speed, negative loop travel velocity possible. Maybe the observed fall exacerbates the split in two stages, it is not obvious to me, but I’m pretty sure I miss something. In real life the effect on line spee...

What that video demonstrates clearly is that the simple classic model of a PB is wrong.
Hi Merlin

I would like to understand what you view the "simple classic model" to be? Could you describe in a nutshell, in words please?

Thanks!
Dirk
