This lock down thread can be whatever we want it to - doesn't have to be fly fishing related :-). Now that you say it, I actually think the wood I got from Piffen was jarra. Brown, very hard, not highly figured, seems quite oily?

Piffen - I started cutting a piece off that wood yesterday, just with a handsaw. I quickly gave up and ordered that bandsaw I've wanted to years. Christ, that's hard wood :-).
Just for the record - if, and I underline if, I were to stock pile anything, it certainly wouldn't be loo paper (I can stick my arse under the shower - most people can't it seems), nor will it be canned food or dried spaghetti. Nope - dishwashing soap, dammit - imagine having to wash up manually aft...
Mark - gardening is out of the question here as our dump sites are also closed :-). I'll be tying flies and probably begin restoration work on a friend's kitchen knife as well. Piffen sent me some very nice chunks of wood that'll yield several knife handles, so I'll use that for the first time.

A Klinkhamer doesn't float - it hangs in the surface film on the parachute hackle, so it cannot, as you've experienced, support weighted flies. Adding buoyant materials materials above the hackle doesn't help as they're not in contact with the water. They are of course very light, which doesn't harm...
