Re: Line configuration affect on rod

Hi Torsten,

It might be worth repeating the experiment without hauling? I think that the issue is to do with your straight premise, any difference will be so slight that you either won’t detect it, or your hauling hand is tidying up the line layout.

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

If the basic casting stroke is cramping a casters capacity to vary it then they have to learn how to change it so they can. In some quarters, here and in the US, the practice is to teach a basic stroke which is highly limiting. I don’t really understand why. As you know, it’s a practice that sets m...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

But it doesn’t seem to matter if we introduce Speys before Presentations, or Wind Casts before Shots. Bow and Arrow Cast and B&A Rolls can be included anywhere, although the most logical place to insert them is in Presentations. I don’t have the opportunity to do structured training this way bu...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

I don’t agree however that it’s always the case that it’s an instructors fault if a caster goes down that track. One of mine went down this path on their own last weekend, he was naturally very analytical and detail orientated individual. I think we default to it as instructors because it’s an obvi...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

All of the above had similarities but definite differences, and none of the info jibed very well with commonly held theories on casting here on SL... which I think is more advanced BTW. But, apparently, all the disparate ideas seem to help folks become better casters. Could it be so simple as havin...

Re: Structuring multiple lessons

It’s interesting how often the solutions can be found in different casts. I actually think that’s the best way to teach. Fix the problem in another (new) cast and then transfer it across........Too easily we can get stuck in a rut. It's an interesting one because my student began to overthink the c...

Structuring multiple lessons

Great article Paul. I think that what we are teaching is increasing the range of controlled movement and stimulating the grey matter with differential learning. The subject material is almost immaterial, I took a beginner through roll cast to snake roll this weekend in consecutive steps to unfreeze ...

Re: Line configuration affect on rod

I suspect 99% of the guys casting a fly rod have no concept of the need to get the line ‘positioned right’, nor even what ‘right’ entails. It is just not emphasized (at least from what I’ve seen/read) as an essential concept. It seems, rather, that instruction is aimed at making it happen indirectl...
