Re: Learning to read rivers
Wow… big topic… Understanding where fish move through the season, weather, water levels etc…. Mostly water temp related. Fast water, more oxygen, bug factories etc, always amazing how people just fish pools and ignore the fast 6-12” deep riffled water, during warm summer days that’s where, or just b...

Re: Weighted flies training time
I used a tungsten nymph with the bend of the hook cut off.
I also practiced casting on a car park with a ‘euro’ 30’ chameleon leader and tungsten nymph, which is massively different to fly line and leader.

Re: Weighted flies training time
I don’t generally, but did before I went to NZ when Chris Dore suggested I may need to cast double tungsten nymphs, off the wrong shoulder into the wind…. Not something I need to do at home
Makes complete sense to practice whatever casts you are going to have to need for your fishing situation

Re: Learning syllabus - certifications
Having just been to the field again, practicing with the shooting head is really great; with the whole head about 4-5’ out of the rod tip it’s way less forging than normal fly line, if the tracking/haul messes up its very obvious in the fly line carry… Definitely something to stick with for a few we...

Re: Learning syllabus - certifications
I have very limited capacity to focus on one thing for 2 long, I get bored with it and I would guess be far more likely to train in faults rather than remove them and improve. So I much prefer spending 5-10 mins on one cast or aspect of a cast then moving onto to something else. I just spent an hour...

Re: Learning syllabus - certifications
The feel of having loads of time or v rushed within a cast is a great point Pom…. That feeling of having ‘stretched time’ only comes with practice… I remember years ago finding something as simple as a curve mend incredibly rushed, it felt really manic, after a bit of practice you suddenly notice yo...

Re: Learning syllabus - certifications
I’d be interested to see what set of casts you settle on… although looking outside today it has a feel of mid-January, wet, grey and windy… Next week looks better, albeit with 30mph plus winds, great for practicing fishing delivery casts in the wind, but hardly conducive to general improvements and ...

Re: Practice casting drills
Only advice I can offer Pom, is…. You need to go to the field later to pull chicks and get laid more… that’s never gonna work first thing in the morning

Re: Drill and Exercises
So using your definition Paul… a few years ago I was trying to time the haul later in the cast, all I focussed on was the hand coming through ( I physically watched it) to delay the haul. Starting with slower / shorter casts and hauls and slowly extending out. Once I had the timing right, I then mov...
