Re: Dissecting the haul
Hi Phil I don't understand this. No matter how late I attempt to haul, if I haul abruptly and very quickly, I create either a tailing loop or at the very least, an upward kick of the fly at the end of the layout. Doesn't this mean the rod bent more if to get this result? The rod does bend more due t...

Re: Evaluating the Haul
Hi Walter I tested two scenarios for calculating a haul distance in simple conditions: • Back cast: starting at 45 degrees from vertical, hands in the same place, 90 degrees rotation of the rod backwards; 90 degrees rotation of the forearm forwards. Both rotate around a single elbow. In the end the ...

Re: The most accurate fly rod
The graphic in post #1 showed on the right side is relevant of a spine issue, and the graphic on the bottom is relevant of a stability issue, two different things. An uncontrolled spine can exhibit lateral displacement of the tip whilst oscillating, and the cause is in the butt section of the rod (c...

Re: Evaluating the Haul
Hi Walter I'm refering to yourpost #3: It’s a common idea that peak hauling speed should occur at peak tip speed for maximum overall line speed but is that really true given that the haul delays rod unloading and tip speed will keep increasing during rod unloading meaning that maximum tip speed will...

Re: Evaluating the Haul
Hi Walter There is some issue with the distances you are using. Let’s say the stripping guide is 0.5m from rod hand. If I follow your scheme the final distance in between hands is also 0.5m. That is pretty small, it should be about 1.5m for a large haul for example. Everything in between is possible...

Re: Evaluating the Haul
It is interesting to note that in the case of Lasse, the distance corresponding to the haul is close to the amplitude of his extended arms. At the beginning of each haul, the distance between haul hand and stripper guide should be reduced if possible, but there is a practical limitation I think. An ...

Re: Defining Haul
Cane rods were available from the beginning of the 20th century. Hollow rods appeared by 1931 (Powell) and 1936 (Winston), produced by west coast rodbuilders. Hedge was known to use Winston rods, but he likely used Powell rods before. Hollow rods were designed for competition purposes. Their lower w...

Re: Evaluating the Haul
Hi Walter
There are something like 6 threads opened on hauling at this time, for something which has already been studied in the past, an example:
http://www.sexyloops.co.uk/theboard/vie ... 242#p75242
I wonder if this is not a bit too much.

Re: Defining Haul
The FFI definition is ok for me. If there can be a consensus on another one, why not, but I do not see the usefulness of it.
