Dregging

Just wonder what flies would be good and have a nice movement while pumping from the bottom. Hard to beat "Hareline" bunny strips for the ass end. The waters I "dredge' for tarpon are between 4 and 9 feet deep using a sink tip Rio quickshooter - no weights. About half the bites are surface bites. I...

Leader profile alteration for increased fly mass?

....and would probably be discounted as unnecessarily complex by them anyway. Hi Mango, I resemble that remark. :D The way I see it, crease flys and those poppers you pictured are more like lures than flies, and Paul is right on as far as how to deal with them. With flies like that, in order to do ...

A take on fly fishing

That is certainly not the way I prefer to fish, but it is very effective and not much different from wading some of the Atlantic Salmon rivers in eastern Canada. The only difference, really, is the amount of line out. It is also the same general technique I have my buddies from up noth use for night...

Effective Rod length?

Hi Paul, I tried a couple more things with the TCR and found that with no line on it it is harder to get agressive vibrations running back up into my elbow. So what I'm wondering (thinking actually) is that if, in addition to the waves casued by a hard stop against the most 4 wt line I can carry, th...

Effective Rod length?

Paul, I chicken out overhead casting trying a stopless cast in the field and the dock is being rebuilt now. My normal rebound on a final forward cast stops about 2 feet from the ground on an overhead cast. I took both a TCR 8 and a TCX 8 out a bit ago with that same 4 wt line. The TCR sends worse wa...

Tailing Loops in exams (Scott's FP 21012016)

anyway even with the line hand in front of his face, going STOP, STOP, RELEASE he still released at the beginning of his forward Casting Stroke - and every bloody time. He simply could not stop himself even while looking at the hand in front of his face! I sympathise with both you and your client, ...

Effective Rod length?

OK., Merlin, I got it. I think we were in a semantic snafu (possibly involving spelling) over the phrase "casting performance" and "related" (I think.) (added) VGB, a while ago I took an 8wt TCR down to the dock with lines from a 4wt to an 8 wt. just to play and see what the max distance I could get...

Effective Rod length?

For the time being and forever maybe, rod performance does not exist without the capabilities of the caster, and there are a number of parameters hiding the actual result. Merlin, I think a whole bunch of people here would agree with that and have done so in this thread. Don Phillips used this grap...

Effective Rod length?

Thanks, Paul. But it could be my new computer too. Everything changes when you are forced to upgrade. Merlin, here's a picture of that rod next to a sage RPLX 12 wt. It is only 8' long, but 31" of it from the fighting butt is handles and reel seat. It is a Randy Towe custom built for a bluefin fly r...

Effective Rod length?

Hi Vince ;) I yet have to watch a fly caster who is able to perform proper fly casting with one outfit and significantly fails with another set up. Having said so - this does not include extreme set ups like a broomstick or a 5 wt. fly line on a Tarpon rod. Regards Bernd I certainly agree with that...
