I love that summation - I'm shamelessly stealing it! :D

Re: Father Time & fly rod choice

Hi Lou,

It would be the opposite for me. I need more strength to use a 12 than an 11 from any given family of rods. (That is, I'd find a Sage Method 12 harder to use than a Sage Method 11.)

Cheers,
Graeme

Re: glass vs graphite

Would the fiberglass manifesto an be and explanation for why there is little option for a fiberglass Spey rod? Or, is boron the purpose of a #4 rod that handles flyline two sizes up… Also, St. Croix now has carbon fiber rods of less than 9’ in leverage 🤔 I have made a glass Spey rod. It’s okay but ...

Re: Fly casting paradox (number 1)

I reject the premise.

I don’t think fly lines can fly. You’ve provided the evidence of their inability to fly in the question.

But I’m more than willing to be entertained by the answers of others. 😁

You can always under-rod then. You won’t spook any fish that way.

Re: glass vs graphite

Does an 8 wt carbon fiber rod bend less than a modern fiberglass rod cast the same distance with the same line, fly and loop? So, I'll try to answer this one from my own experience and from watching my students casting my glass rods (or their own.) My short answer is "it depends" ... :) S...

Re: glass vs graphite

Can you share with me the FG blanks you like? The CTS I just bought was a custom build. Thank you Phil My favourites are the custom blanks I had made at CTS. I've made a few 8' single piece rods that were designed to be 10wt rods ("a few" because I made three for myself and several others...

Re: glass vs graphite

Hi Phil, I think a glass rod with an 8 label will often bend more than a CF rod with an 8 label, but some of that is the expectation of the buyers being met by the makers. For some reason, many of the commercial rod makers like to make very bendy ‘glass rods because we want the “traditional ‘glass f...

Re: glass vs graphite

I love my (many) glass rods but I’m not going to give up the carbon fibre ones. Horses for courses. PS - as a geologist, I strongly object to the implication that graphite has any place in a fly rod. It’s a truly amazing mineral, but it’s not noted for its tensile strength. Carbon fibre, on the othe...
