Interesting how much fish sleep!

I suspect that one of the reasons that there are so few fish in NZ backcountry is not because of poor spawning, but because there are not many safe havens from huge spates. Cheers, Paul Interesting theory! I have also wondered why the fish populations in NZ rivers are like they are. Possibly a subj...

Interesting how much fish sleep!

Steelhead do it too. There’s a video somewhere of Jim Teeny throwing rocks at them to wake them up and subsequently catching them. I though it was a complete joke - until the first time I did it! Seen fish sleeping in NZ too. Caught one by throwing tiny pebbles near to it until it woke up, then fed ...

Black Zulu and Londons west end

Zulu was one of my favorite flies for years as well, but I don’t think I have tied one on for about a decade. Not a lot of trout fishing in my life these days! The blue version was an absolute killer fly in the Hebrides (west coast of Scotland, for our non UK readers) - and nowhere else. Because tro...

Fly Test Tank

A cheap 12 volt bilge pump should move enough water. The hard part is getting a laminar flow.

Poppers for Trout

Yep.

Micro sized frog popper. Chuck it out and leave it for a while, and if it doesn’t get eaten, give it a pop. Stocker trout, so they probably think it’s a fish pellet.

Moonlight on Mrs. Higginbotham

Having read Viking Lars’ front page today I searched the internet, with some trepidation, for the pattern for this excellently named fly. Found something here: http://www.feathersfliesandphantoms.co.uk It looks like this: https://goo.gl/images/E8DPNB https://goo.gl/images/E8DPNB Tail: Topping Body: ...

Hi Lars - did you see this one - http://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/loop-the-loop ?
I hadn’t seen that one. Good work! Explains why nobody can decide which fly line loop is the best - they’re all good!

Shock absorber - Bernd’s FP

That's very interesting Nick, I can definitely see how it works at distance. I've found it easier and more effective to feel takes and set the hook using lighter lines at distance. (Well 90ft plus) Cheers, Paul I think it’s only in a really specific set of circumstances where having a non stretch l...

Shock absorber - Bernd’s FP

I had one of those lines too. I actually liked it, until I used some sort of line treatment on it and it turned into a sticky noodle. At least it didn’t snap. These days I use a non stretch running line with shooting heads for salmon in saltwater. I have found that it helps a lot with hooksets at di...

I could never understand why they wanted non-stretch lines and used powergum to compensate! The actual answer to this is that it’s about controlling the amount of stretch. With 30 meters of stretchy line out you have 30 times as much stretch as with 1 meter, but if you have a non-stretch line you c...
