Re: Evaluating the Haul

Merlin, Here is a video of Günter Feuerstein's "power haul" on the forward cast. I would think that moving the haul hand in the opposite direction to the stripper guide's path would produce higher haul speeds since it would capture more of the stripper guide speed contribution to the over...

Re: Rod tracking and accuracy

Further evidence: A tracking error manifests as a defect in the loop, often laying the leader sideways. Have any of you guys ever cast a rod that prevents the leader from straightening normally?

Re: Rod tracking and accuracy

I'd say a good caster will have already allowed for any systematic tracking error introduced by the rod (if it even exists) while they cast. Every good caster I know can pick up any rod with any line on it and make great casts within about three false casts (I'm guessing the actual number of casts h...

I tried another experiment, tied the rod top guide with some mono @ the ground and did then a load/unload test, bending the rod.

Thanks Torsten. That should do it.

Re: Defining Haul

I vote for "Pulling line through the rod guides with the non-casting hand." It's simple, doesn't need a purpose and does not qualify the haul for efficiency or effectiveness. It contains within it the implication of "relativity". It just describes what a haul does and how it's do...

Re: #10 line recommendation

It may be a bad batch. They did have some quality control issues a few years ago. Maybe they are back?

Re: Saltwater Retrieves

Hi Lou, The retrieve is the fishing phase of the cycle, so it's going to be very different for each species and for each fly. My distance cast is not going to be any different if I'm fishing - it's going to be determined by the fish. Typically though, a sunken fly will need to be raised first - ofte...
