Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

I will try to get some comparative values for Bernd's haul path with a different y separation distance using Tracker. Merlin, The shutter speed in Bernd's video was too slow to be able to measure the position of the stripper guide. blurred_rod.jpg Consequently estimating the effect that a smaller y...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

A better approach would be the zebra line that Paul has shown in one of his videos, estimating the velocity (marked segments <-> stripper guide) would be there independent of the camera angle. Torsten, Doesn't the zebra line measurement of also have the same 2-D perspective problem if there is a si...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

that starting your haul with a straight arm, and then having to bend it and straighten is sub-optimal. Lasse, I don't see why you would have to straighten the elbow to move you line hand nearer the stripper guide at the start of the back cast. Can't you keep a 70-80 degree bend in your elbow while ...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

Thus it would be better to start with the haul hand nearer the stripper guide and then move it in a more –x horizontal path while the stripper guide was moving in a +x direction. Minimizing the y separation distance during the haul will take more advantage of how the high stripper guide speed impac...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

Bernd hauls horizontally for his backcasts and vertically for his forward casts (see post #7). Merlin, I think Bernd's is the better path and could result in more haul speed if he moved his haul hand higher at the start of the back cast to reduce the y separation distance on the back cast. A large ...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

Is it rod centric, earth centric or something else?
Walter,
Earth centric. Thanks for checking my sqrt(sum of squares) calculations.

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

Can you see how the diagram I posted earlier illustrates this flaw in their haul? Graeme, Your diagram did not include any effect from the movement of the stripper guide so it overlooks the impact that the motion of the stripper guide can have on the back cast haul speed. In fact the stripper guide...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

Graeme, I would agree that the circular haul hand path that most casters use in their haul does result in a narrow range of pull angles relative to the butt as the rod is being rotated. That is not the case with the haul demonstrated by Gunter_Feuersdtein earlier in this thread however which indicat...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

Perhaps this (metric) illustration of Walter's example might make it easier for you to grasp the concept we're talking about? Graeme, And what would the comparative values be if you started with the haul hand at the stripper guide? Do you agree that the haul speed can be calculated by taking the de...

Re: Hauling - pulling fly line through the guides

in line with the rod I will pull 2 feet of line through the guides. If my haul is at right angles to the rod I will pull roughly .8 feet of line through the guides. Walter, I don't see how the pull angle relative to the butt effects the amount of line pulled through the guides. In the video posted ...
