Hey Guys.

I made a video of my practice session from today.
It is a full DT #5 carry measured at 27,5m.

As usual when looking back at the video I did something totally different then I thought. :D
I thought I was casting like Paul, but I wasn't.

Anyway here is the link to the video.

Would love to here your thoughts/tips

Cheers, Bart

Some extra info.

The second forward cast is the one on which I end up carrying the full line.
Is it not easy to see but there is big bunch of knots in the running line which end up in my hand after the second forward cast.

Looking good Bart

Can you get your rod hand down a little lower? I find it easier to move quickly when operating at shoulder level but, we're all built differently.

Hi Ben.

I tried. I also noticed it's a bit high, but it feels uncomfortable holding it lower.
Maybe I should try it for a longer period.

Hi Bart

Your old style had an extremely graceful wrist path, around shoulder height except for the forward cast which went higher.

If you'd like i can do a graphic analysis of this video for you.

All the best,
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Thanks. It would be awesome if you want to make a graphic analysis!

I am no physics expert, but that high hand position can't be to optimal stance to apply power. I should change that.

It just doesn't seem smooth Bart, the rotation particularly on FC seems a little jerky however if you are carrying a full DT it must work OK. I think you could maybe rotate later, I cast palm down and use a V grip. When I really concentrate on pushing the butt forwards at a fixed angle and only rotating once the butt is well in front of me I generate more speed. If I time the haul to be halfway through rotation that also works for me. With a high arm I am not throwing as fast, I hear it in the pitch of the line and rod.

Cheers

Ben

I would try to open up much more on the BC for a comparison.
It's an exploration; bring a flyrod.

Thanks for the input.

@Ben. I agree. The tip is also wobbling a lot in the FC.

There still seems to be a fundamental difference in the style you guys are using and I can not lay my finger on what it exactly is.
I have been watching some videos of Paul and my casting just seems a lot less fast. Maybe that is because of my strange position.

For now I will concentrate on my hand position, late rotation and more open BC.
There is much more to gain

The tip wobble, I've got video from a few years ago of me casting in a similar way. You appear to be turning the rod "hard" rather than fast and and with "speed". Not sure if you'l be able to make sense of that Bart.
What helps me is not to think about forming loops or stops but to think about slinging the line as fast as possible with the rod. Particularly think think this way when going 170.

Cheers

Ben
