Are we allowed to double haul when doing the accuracy event?
I though I read somewhere it isn’t allowed, but there is no mention of this in the rules.

Yes absolutely. It’s not allowed in the IFF exam!

When I’ve watched Americans they mostly don’t haul - no doubt this is because it shortens the line carry and adds one more variable The only time I’ve seen them hauling is when dealing with windy conditions. I don’t know if this is why it’s excluded from the IFF exam - I don’t think so because when I was on the MCI committee this case up and I was told that they don’t examine for comp accuracy, only fishing accuracy. It’s not something I’ve ever really understood to be honest. If it’s more difficult to be accurate with hauling, then why exclude it?

Haysie in Tassie has a haul feed, where he hauls on the backcast, but then feeds the hauling hand up for the hover. He has the best hover I’ve seen. I’ve never seen anyone else do this.

I find it hard to be consistent with Haysies hover, he taught me it back when he stole my backcast :D
No doubt its a matter of practice, seen him throw accuracy, and it was as good as watching Steve.

Cheers

Flycasting, so simple that instructors need to make it complicated since 1685

So if you haul when you are fishing, it is never accuracy?

I believe the forward haul can distort the loop which makes it difficult to sight the fly over targets. On the backcast it is inconsequential, so a back haul is fine. It is the static position of the line hand that is important and the reason people feed back is to reduce the line length between that static hand position and the stripper guide. For each of these reasons, many casters pinch the line under their rod hand when having those last few critical false casts.

Of course in Cumbria there was a lot of double hauling to the targets but that was very much the exception.
