CAUTION: New Member from South Africa

Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa. I enjoy upstream dry fly fishing in some of our amazing trout streams with a sprinkling of stillwater, salt and yellowfish fishing. I also enjoy tying flies. I have a fledgling youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCThwJr ... QVfQT_onBQ

My interest in improving my casting came from a workshop hosted by our local club with Tim Rajeff as a guest. This is where I discovered that my casting wasn’t completely kak. Having the opportunity to learn from experienced casting instructors has motivated me to further develop my casting.

Some of my casting objectives currently include:

- Developing better efficiency (distance to false cast ration)
- Achieve better loop formation on my forward delivery (This is huge issue ATM)
- Better my presentation and accuracy for my real-world fishing scenarios
- Perfecting my tailing loop;-)

Competitive fishing definitely isn’t for me but I would consider competitive fly casting if the opportunity presented itself.
Being new to the forum and having not studied its contents just yet, I am hoping there will be some content to help me self-troubleshoot casting issues. If there are any threads relating to the following, I would really appreciate a link:

- Recording your cast; tips and tricks, camera angles etc.
- Casting Jargon, if I am going to talk about it, I may as well make sense.
- Practice exercises, routines and games etc.
- Practice flies (is this even a thing?)
- Any other recommended reading, posts or stickies.

If there is anyone from CT here, please hit me up. Looking forward to learning a lot from the forum.

Tight loops.

Hi Matthew, and a big welcome to the Board!!!

Haven’t fished SA but we do have a few Board members there. Zoran and Gilgamesh are in SA. Sudesh wrote front pages for us a few years back.

Right have you found this section: https://www.sexyloops.com/flycast/ ?
This would be something to practise: https://www.sexyloops.com/index.php/ps/ ... -challenge

I have a video somewhere asking to see close up of top half of the body filmed from the side for accuracy. And then for distance we need to see the whole body, but not the rod or the line because that’s just about impossible to see anyway!

It woulld be great if you upload some videos and give us the link. You’ll certainly get a lot of advice here.

There are comp flies. Mostly they are something like an oorange or yellow palmer with the hook cut off. I use them for accuracy over water. In all other cases I use wool.

There is another excellent casting section here: https://www.sexyloops.com/carlos/

Jargon. I think the jargon page is on the archived Board that I’m trying to revive. This is useful http://www.sexyloops.com/flycasting/definitions2.shtml
Any others that come up please ask. SLP is straight line path (rod tip during casting stroke). CF is counterflex which is the bend in the rod in the other direction after the loop has formed. RSP is rod straight position which is when the rod tip is travelling quickest after it has unloaded. MCL is Minimum Chord Length, the shortest distance between the rod tip and the rod butt during the casting stroke. But if someone uses a term you don’t know then please just ask.

I don’t understand everything here - particularly there is a lot of stuff in the technical analysis forum that goes way over the top of my head. But it can be fun trying to figure out what they are taking about. (and actually I deeply suspect that some of them don’t know either!).

As TZ once said, Sexyloops is a Minefield of Information

Incidentally if you want to get into comp casting then fantastic. Lots of guys here do compete.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul

Thanks for the getting started guide!

Ya I have already sidestepped some hectic technical stuff but I did get a couple ideas there. Your snakehead videos are great, haven't done the casting ones but Mrs S will be thrilled to watch them with me this evening!

Looking forward to getting to know the sexyloopers :yeahhh:

There’s only about 3hrs of casting ones. :D It was originally and APP with the idea being that you could take individual lesssons to the practise field. I reckon there is about 3 years of practise there.

These are the comp rules for the flycasting worlds. The accuracy game is good practise. https://www.wcflycasting.com/upload/Rul ... asting.pdf

Whatever you practise, it always gets more interesting with a target!

Cheers, Paul
