Poppers for Trout

Has anyone ever caught trout on poppers? I've caught many trout on mouse patterns but have never even thought about using a popper. I have used poppers for almost every other fish species I hunt.....

Anyone ever tried? Think it would spook em?

I am convinced it will work at times.
A couple of weeks ago I was fishing some small trout water in the UK. I used a hopper and put quit some floatand on it.
There were alot of trout showing interest, but none where taking.
I decided to strip it in very fast and it created a lot of disturbance. 2 trout took in a very short time.

No I haven’t but I haven’t tried it much - a few times without success (or maybe once in Ireland). I have fished greased muddlers with great success. Not much difference to a small popper but without the pop.

Yep.

Micro sized frog popper. Chuck it out and leave it for a while, and if it doesn’t get eaten, give it a pop. Stocker trout, so they probably think it’s a fish pellet.

No, but wake flies can be good for Sea Trout on a dark night. I don't see why a popper would be refused in similar circumstances. What fun, if it worked! Salmon can go nuts for a wake fly too - a riffled hitch, or a floating stripped Sunray. Very visual and exciting fishing!

I’m sure that small poppers for trout at times could be devestating. I’m particularly thinking at night in the shallows. I’ve been meaning to tie some smaller versions of the Snakehead Popper I fish. I’ll tie some back in Malaysia and post some photos.

Yes it was Berlin’s poppers I fished on Corrib. I much prefer soft foam to hard foam however. I bought some drill bits recently through FFFT for making foam fly cylinders. I’ll make a review soon.

I have caught stockies on wee American panfish poppers in Scotland, and had wild brown trout on Big skated Bombers on rivers which I guess serve a similar role without the popping.

Just noticed this tread
I have caught 2 on poppers in lake Eucumbene [small #8 or 10 loud mouth] when it was just getting dark.
The fish were chasing something, after few casts and different strips later, had a cast popped it, got side tracked to another fish while watching the other fish, next minute I was hooked up, the second one it was simular strip strip stop pop and wait few seconds.

I have never caught any after that, although I don't have the chance to fish for them as often.

I am going to NZ next week I will try there as well, let you know if I do any good.
