usually in fast water the current pulls proper tension into the hole connection. That helps. For sure I would check to use a "zero" stretch line + leader. And then a fast strip helps to feel the fish more early and thus leaving you in a better position to fairly hook them.
If you have soft takers, setting rapidly the fly free after the take, the lowest possible line weights help. And shorter casts may also help.
All depends on the species of fish and the situation what is possible and what's not...
