Graeme, what do you think of the weight of those Makos? I was a bit hesitant to buy one initially because of the weight. However, the ability to go from “free spool” right back to the exact fishing drag setting overruled the weight issue for me.
In fact, the extra weight seems to balance the rod well which might not aide in the cast but makes it more comfortable holding the rod on the bow of the boat for extended periods of time. I think there was a long Board discussion in past years about reel weight effect on casting.

I've never been one to worry about the weight of a reel. Unless it's an extreme example, I seem to be blind to it and get on with fishing. I guess if I had the choice, I would make them a little bit lighter. But as you say, that wonderful engineering makes them a pleasure to use.
