Tracy and I had a very tough day yesterday, physically tough. We'd heard about a productive flat some way from where we are staying - looking at Google Earth we decided that we could get there by canoe
. This wasn't so bad, but it did take us 2.5 hours of paddling (often against the tide and the wind and through areas that were rough enough for us to formulate a capsize plan
). We did break the trip for some fishing along the way and Tracy caught this bar jack - the biggest one I've seen

When we got to our destination we didn't find the schools of big bonefish we had in mind when we set off.

This is where things started to go wrong though. From where we anchored the canoe the flat was a 40 min wade. We knew there were more than one route through to it, so having fished it we took the decision to take a different path back. We headed off into the mangrove channel that we thought would take us back to the canoe. After 20 mins or so the going started getting soft. After 40 mins we were sinking to our knees. After an hour the channel had disappeared and we were in the mangrove roots and lost. We had to double back through all the shit we'd just waded and get back to the flat. We did this and retraced our steps to the entrance we came in on and then back to the canoe. We lost over 2hrs and because of this the canoe was high and dry
. We then had to drag the canoe maybe 400yds to the water, it doesn't sound much but we were pretty knackered at this point. We got to water and started the paddle back. In a few years time I'll embellish this story to say we were bumped by a tiger shark during a transit across an ocean-side bay, but actually it swam past the boat twice at about 30ft away, it was a very big shark though! I'm sure Tracy's paddling picked up a bit just about then
. We the ran into more dry sand banks, probably about 1/2 mile of pulling the canoe. We arrived back totally exhausted. A very tough day!
