What about bronze hooks from, well, the bronze age, which preceeded the iron age :-).

Hi,
Good barbless hooks and thinner nylon or have they made the eyes on hooks bigger.

if we go further down to the iron age, bronze age, etc. we should admit that the very first fly angler on earth was a monkey. :???:
Wise indeed was George Selwyn Marryat when he said: "its not the fly; its the driver"

Weeeeellll, I don't know, Paul :p

I'll argue that the technological step from bone to bronze, in hooks, was a bigger one than going from bronze to iron, and from iron to steel...

:pirate:

BTW, I still think modern flylines are the most important technological advance in fly fishing...

I think fly fishing took its most major leap forward when we started shooting line. This is why I think the reel was the most important step!

Yes I know. Couple that with French Nymphing and you'll have a killer technique. Still I would want a reel for big fish emergencies. A small reel with monofilament backing, run the line up through the blank - that would be a killer method.

But you're always going to be limited to casting twice the length of the rod or thereabouts.

Unless you have that greatest of advances - a modern flyline - than you can cast 125 feet :-).

HAH :-)
