Which fly rod is best for casting longer distance? I read this recently.
Slower rods bend more, which means you can throw a fly longer distance.

Interesting :D

Please convince Paul about that, he's using a poker to throw a 5 weight

The rod that helps you throw the longest, is the rod you use most. Bendier rods tends to rob distance as the counterflex holds back the shot.

Hi Lou, someone is very mistaken there. The only time a bendier rod might help is as a fix against poor technique. I think there is a limit on the stiffness but I use a fast ten weight (HT10) for 5WT distance.

Cheers, Paul
It's an exploration; bring a flyrod.

I think this is an interesting question. Suppose, hypothetically, I have two rods with the same overall spring constant e.g. the tip deflects by the same amount for a given load, but one of these rods bends down to the corks whilst the other has the bend concentrated at the tip. Which is better for distance?

I think it's easy to get in to the thinking that 'through action' means 'soft', but in the example above this isn't the case.

I don't know the answer by the way :kungfu: :pirate: :D

Cheers, James.

Exactly, also, what effect would different lengths have? BTW, my guess would be the rod that bends further down to the cork.

Hi James

I have a really hard time visualising this, could you clarify?

You need to take into consideration the self loading too (rod bending under its own inertia during acceleration). With the same spring constant, the bendy butt rod will not accelerate the line as much with the same input due to more mass being further away from the point where force is exertend on the rod.

Funny thing is that for DH spey (competition and fishing) many tend to like stiff tip bendy butt rods - including me!

In order for me to fully comprehend what you are saying I would need to research this. Can you please clarify. With two rods having the same spring constant wouldn't the rod being bent the furthest produce more energy?
