The standard of one guide per every foot of rod length, seems to be what we use.
But, do shorter rods deviate from that...more guides per foot of rod length?

How so?

I mean, what's the point of a rule of thumb like "1 guide per foot of rod length" if you decide that shorter rods need more guides? The whole premise is based on rod length ....

If you're looking to build a rod, buy one more guide than you think you'll need, tape on both configurations, run the deflection tests, have a few test casts and go with what works.

The rule of thumb is not an absolute rule: suck it and see!

Graeme

Agree, the rule is not an absolute.

I have 9ft rods with 10 guides, just realized the rule changes with shorter (being careful here :)) fly rods.

The SL 7'6 #10 has 9 rings including tip-top. The 9' #10 has 10 rings. The 9'6 Comp3 has 10 rings. It depends on the deflection tests and how the fly line looks as it appears on the flexed rod.

Is that a typo or have you made a rod that doubles as a pool cue?

I was asked for a HT12 7'6 for PNG Bass. Turns out it's a 10. Which is perfect for Snakehead. I think this will become my no1 Malaysian rod.
