What setup do I need to get into this? Barrio's ST27 head a good place to start or make my own. Got a few unused lines here.

What about shooting line/backing and rod weights?

Yep that works. Or cut back an 8wt DT. Tellius has some of these from China that are very soft and he cuts back. I’ve tried a few different shooting lines and haven’t settled on any of them yet!

For the rod I have a T38 9’6 that I use. It’s a soft T38 and a poker with 27g! I’ll bring it up to Cumbria!

Barrios 27 gram heads are good, otherwise Tellis' 27 gram ones are good as Paul says.
A DT 8 will make quite ok shootingheads for this event, if you can get your hands on an old GT140 in an 8 Wright, thats what I use. MED 8 and GT125 sadly aren't that good as 27 gram shootingheads.
A DT 9 cut up for heavy backwinds might also ve considered, as well as a DT 6 or 7 cut for the days with no wind...

Can you please explain why these lines are not very good for this Lasse?
I use a cut back GT125 #8 and suck big time. I would love to assign the line as the reason, but I am sure there is more to it.
What makes a good shooting head?

I haven't measured the MED I cut up, but will now, I cast it against three other heads and it consistently came far last. The GT125 tapers down too quickly for my liking, so front tapet, fat head but short and then qiuck taper and long thin slow taper. I suspect the MED I cut up is similar. It feels a bit like casting with too much overhang

The MED reversed had some better results a long time back. I haven’t experimented with it as a head but I’ll be doing this soon with a crash helmet
