As I said, faulty design or mishap prior with the rod....

Quite sure your scandi heads are lighter than my comp heads 😉

Had a go today, you must be old :D

Starting with the flyline tip at 20 feet from my feet to have a reference point for all casts, and placing target at 40/60/85 feet to see, striping in to 20 feet between shots. Same leader on both lines and fly (just swapped it over) I could not tell a difference in speed of delivery, though 40 feet seemed slowest with the 8wt line, didn't slip as well as the 10wt did, so I needed a falsecast before hitting target, two longer ones where very similar. Should I time them to see? (have video of them 😉)

Cheers
Lasse

Actually your forward cast is a bit on the slow side, it might be your age, but more importantly your backcast won’t work over water :p So let’s take the same line and make a 2m flyline pick up over water and hit a target at 18m. Which rod weight/stiffness makes this quickest?

Ie take an 8wt line, pick up from 2m flyline out the tip and hit an 18m target using 4, 6, 8 and 10WT rods.

Good stuff - we’re almost on the same page!

Won't work over water 🤣🤣🤣

You're sort of changing horses now, aren't you? We've gone from which line is fastest (8 or 10) to now talking of which rod deliver an 8 wt line the fastest 🙈 how do you determine what weight a rod is?

Or just send me your range and I'll do the casting...

Same page, as if 😂

While you are at it, how about making 20 false casts as fast as you can while carrying 15m of line? That’s another one I’ve been meaning to do but haven’t found a stopwatch :p

I have lots of horses

Off fishing! I’ll try the above this week :)

There's a stopwatch in your phone 🙈

And no problem, what are you trying to prove with it? And do the line have to straightens between casts 😉

Knæk og bræk 😜

I contacted Jim for some comments. There is no trend for a come back to standards for all lines. Rodmakers can either stick to the standards since there is still a number of lines folllowing them, and those who want to depart from the standards can do it. It is a question of choice for rod manufacturers, and in any case they have to face some claims from their customers because they chose the wrong line for their rod. This is why line recommandations are available today.

Complaining about this situation remains useless, I'm afraid. Those of you who are in touch with SA, Rio, etc. may get their comments on the reason why they do not come back to standards, or at least give the right number of grains on their boxes to minimize confusion.

I can ask SA and RIO but I think we know the answer, Merlin - it’s what most customers want!! The manufacturers are driven by sales and lines that are heavier fit the stiff action rods that their customers can’t cast using their fixed casting stroke with correctly weighted lines. It’s simple really, they bought the wrong rod and are in serious need of some casting practise/tuition. The band aid fix is to sell them a heavier line. I will ask for some comments shortly - they may not be quite so blunt :D

Lasse, I think having the line straighten between casts would be a good idea. :p I think what you will find is lighter lines on the same rod will have a faster cycle. Also I think you will find that lighter lines on rods of the same relative stiffness will also have a faster cycle - that one I’m not so sure about, but when I drop rod class on the HT series I have a noticeably faster casting cycle.

This stuff is important here!
