It’s a funny thing but I’ve had very few lines that are underweight

Me too, and all from the same manufacturer...

Could it have something to do with, more mass equals better results on average, so it's better to target higher than lower, for less complaints?

I’m sure. It’s absolutely market driven. Rods get stiffer, lines get heavier. It’s only a problem when you need to fish small and fine. As one of the Ardleigh regulars used to say “there are anglers and there are danglers”. I’m still not sure which category he put me in

Rods get stiffer.... Really? A minute few does, the majority, not so much, persieved stiffness might have gone slightly up, but not so much that it really accomodate going up 2 line sizes.. What's happened is the old go up 2 line sizes with a 30 foot shootinghead, and everyone is making wannabee shootinghead lines these days... Works great for the average application

The average application being as far as you can throw I catch most of my fish where I can see how they eat the fly. Soon it will be like golf and we will need a different line for every 10ft extra cast!

So you're tenkara fishing, that's ok

I catch most where I need binocular vision to see, with polarized filter and a online camera on the line
And if I need the camera I'll opt for the heavier line any day

And like Lars, these non standard lines pisses me off! Bought a barstool line once, was probably 2wts to heavy, will never buy another one

Hang on when rods had two line weights the heavier one was for the short WF lines! It would follow therefore that for long heads the line should be lighter. They are the ones I’d use for distance.

But anyway I just want one line for fishing all my fishing distances.
