RIO Technical Trout line

#1

Post by nicholasfmoore »

Hi All,

Has anyone tried this line? It has a very nice long head, which is excellent! My two current favorite lines are the SA MED #6 and Paul's Thunderbolt #6, both fantastic lines. Has anyone tried the WF#4 on the hot torpedo?

All the best

Nick

I haven’t tried if Nick. What’s the taper? And how heavy is it? :D

Cheers, Paul

Interesting. I didn’t expect that taper. Ok I’ll ask a few questions from RIO tomorrow.

I think it's AFTM standard! Shock Horror! :p That's great, can you ask them to make it in orange for instructors?

I’ll have to try one and yes it’s bang on AFFTA
The Technical Trout is right on the AFFTA standard—120 grains at 30’ for a 4wt, 140 for a 5wt, 160 for 6wt. I designed the taper for delicate turnover of a long leader and small fly. It has about a 10’ front taper, though this length varies slightly with line weight. After the front taper it immediately starts into the back taper, but it’s a very gradual reduction in diameter. The idea was to make the line comfortable to cast at as wide a range of distances as possible. So, with any more than 10ft of line out the heaviest section is out of the rod tip. As you carry more line the gradual back taper keeps weight from compounding as quickly as a double taper. Basically we’ve tried to create a wider “sweet spot” between struggling to load the rod on a short cast and overloading it on a long one.

Obviously a double taper offers maximum control when carrying long lengths of line and the best casters can compensate for the added weight by modifying their casting stroke. I find the WF Technical Trout a little easier to handle than a DT at typical dry fly distances, though. It’s somewhat similar to the Gold but leans more towards line control and delicate presentation rather than loading the road in close and turning over powerfully.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Chris
The drawing reminds me of some lines I use in heavier line weights. I’ve only used a DT4 on the HT4 :D

Ignore that, was only looking at the taper drawing. Just seen the head length.

It sort of reminds me of the Infinity. But all these drawings start to look the same and I can only really tell by casting them. That it is AFFTA bang on means that it is well worth trying on the HT4.
