Scientific anglers mastery VPT

#1

Post by nicholasfmoore »

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody has used this line for speys, as it's quite tricky to get hold of the SLX now. What do you think of it?

I've tried a couple of Rio SHS on the HT, the '#5' was quite nice on this. :)

All the best

It's the next one on my list to try so I'm interested to see how this thread goes.

Cheers,

The Rio SHS 5 is a great 7, litterally ;) Paul would call it a brick on a string :D

The VPT seems interesting on paper, haven't tried it, so looking forward to hear the verdict, seems like a trianglen taper lookalike, and thats a great line so.....

Cheers

Hi all,

I'd call it that too ;) Isn't the '#5' closer to an #8 mate?

I could only afford two to give it a try (£100!!!!) ;) i tried to get the '#3' but i haven't seen one in stock over here for a very long time, they only start at '#4' unfortunately. It's 2 grains off the true #7, so would you call it a #7? :)

I think i'll get the VPT and get back to you all :)

All the best

Depends on what you call an #8...
The Rio SHS I have that said 5 on the bag, weighs in at 30 feet as a dead on 7 weight line according to AFFTA 😉

Looking forward to hear about the SA line.

I don't mind the SH Spey line being heavy by as much as it is. For its stated purpose, it makes sense to do that for the bulk of the market who might buy them. They certainly work very well as spey lines and it sort of matches the philosophy seen in the DH spey world, where lines are a couple of weights higher than we'd use for overhead casting.

The physics of it also makes a certain amount of sense, if we consider that the portion of line being moved (motivated?) by the rod tip during the casting stroke acting on the D loop is very much reduced compared with an overhang head cast. Yes, a good caster will be able to handle that with a standard line, but the bulk of the line-buying market doesn't fall into that category.

I teach roll and spey casts with the SH Spey line, passing my rod to the students to prove that I'm cheating. :D I also fish with it a lot these days because it's fun. It's like a shooting head that's a bit more versatile, and some people really love shooting heads. ;)

I still want to try that VPT though.

Cheers,
Graeme

Hey, I like that line alot too, but I know its not a 5 when it says on the bag, thats the only thing I have against it, Paul is much more hating on them than I am 🤣🤣🤣

If only it was as versatile as a shootinghead, but I have enough of those 😉

No no I think they are great. I’m always changing lines between casts. I’m looking forward to the time when we have a different line for presentation casts too.

Cheers, Paul
It's an exploration; bring a flyrod.
