Self driving cars
It's going to be an interesting algorithm that decides between hitting a pedestrian child against a fatal truck accident. Maybe there'll be some sort of opt in opt out clause that will affect your insurance premium.
Ultimately of course humans won't be allowed to drive.
"What can I do today?" - man asks computer.
"Nothing. You've been decommissioned for being error-prone"
Any fly fishing rebel who reads this 100 years from now - good luck to you mate.

There's no way I'll be buying a "self-driving" car while I'm still capable of driving (or riding a bike.) I won't even drive an automatic transmission if I have the choice. I love driving: why would I want a computer to take me somewhere?
Especially if that somewhere is off the road, over a river, down a gully and along a beach ....

Need to nip into a shop to buy something and there's no parking? Just send it round the block to pick you up later! Needs a service or short of petrol? Talk to it through your watch and away it goes! I can see some benefits.
Cheers, Paul

Uber.
Owning a car ties up a lot of money in a resource that doesn't really get used for much of the day. If parking is that hard to find, it means there's a lack of infrastructure to support owning a car and Uber starts to look more attractive.
Still, I DO pay for the convenience, so I'm a hypocrite for not taking my own advice. (It's hard to tow my kayak to the water in an Uber car ... )
You're right though Paul: I can see benefits in a car that comes when I whistle, even if it is adding to traffic problems by driving itself around the block while I shop. (Imagine even trying to get to the shop when the roads are gridlocked with "parked" self driving cars. Maybe it would be better if I paid someone's "parked" car to deliver my groceries while the owner shopped.)
Cheers,
Graeme

Sure but I'm most interested to see the program that determines whether you should have a head on collision with a pedestrian vs a on-coming truck!
Self driving cars
The answer is in the computer, Paul: ejection seat and truck crash.
This allows the pedestrian to shoot the scene and post it on Youtube.
What a fascinating future. I expect some self casting rod too.
It must be a nightmare, I have to wake up.

Fly rods are like women, they won't play if they're maltreated

It's coming that's for sure!
Self driving cars
Paul,
I've ridden in a self driving car and they work. I think the vision is that for us poor schmucks who have to work a 9 to 5, the cars drive us to work while we do something else. So we have use a car share to do that and have another car that we can drive that would pull the boat on the weekends.
If you're driving, you have to still have to make the choice that you point out. So what do you do? Hit the tree or the pedestrian when you're driving.
