Congratulations on your purchase and your first ride to work, Campbell. If your bum hurts, that's normal in the beginning and will go away with time. Don't give up on the saddle just yet. :)

I get more pain from a softer saddle. But the thing that hurts me on a long ride is my lower back. I'm actually thinking of taking up yoga (OK it's mostly for the chicks, but I still think it's a good idea!)

I know that i sound like a broken record but if i were you i'd see a professional bike fitter. Ideally a female one who does yoga too.
I agree with the saddle thing, soft ones are only comfy for a couple of miles. After that they become instruments of torture.
