Thoughts on jazzing up the Board?
Hi Neil,
Yes the problem is finding it although forums always do well on Google. Whenever I have a car problem I always end up in a forum.
Advertising is not something we've ever done. Ignoring all the search engines and trawlers sexyloops.com gets around 45-50,000 Unique IPs/month and has done for over a decade. I've always been of the opinion that the best way to create readers is to create interesting content. We only need 30-40 really active guys to have a busy Board.
I completely agree that we don't want a what line do I want for this rod/ what fly is working best this season discussions and we're not likely to get them!
Cheers, Paul

What is the marketshare? Has the fly fishing market shrunk, increased or stayed stable in the last years? Maybe this forum is doing OK in that regard.
How many new fly fishers are interested in casting or has the fly line industry with their "new" standards fixed the problem and everything does cast further these days anyway?
How many of the new fly fishers do want to know what the old farts have to say? ... when they experience the old farts being mostly that - old farts knowing everything better. (not the board here - generally seeking - there is so much "right" and "wrong" and endless discussions about what line wiggle is called what, who mentioned it first ... same for fly tying. If it's not the exact type woblahoo material so and so has used than this fly will never work, guaranteed ...
How many fly fishers think they can learn it all from youtube?
What I am missing mostly is the fish. Now it's pictures of fish, not the ><))))*> itself any more which is interesting. How about a fly fishing game or simulator? Who needs all this reality of cold wind, rain and long walks?
By the way ... I got a spin rod for christmas and will fling out North Country wet's with it when the ice is gone

... just realized that two of the forums I used to contribute too actually organized an annual member meetings. So people felt personally involved in the discussions and knew who was behind "20incher_123" or "Sir Castalot" - in fact it is similar to the idea of having a Hot Torpedo owners club.
Of course that makes it hard for this forum, since among the members are even boat people from out of the jungle. Maybe some sort of regional SL chapters would work, like motorcycle clubs.

We have had quite a few gatherings Christian, in Scotland, Spain, NZ and Canada. There will be one this year - not sure where yet! - Sept 22 to celebrate 20 years of Sexyloops.
Andy, there is a really interesting type of fishing here called "sharking".
I'll start a new topic.
Cheers, Paul

Still more videos and discussions about them. In particular a thread where requests for specific videos could be made and those requests could be fulfilled.Paul Arden wrote:If you are a lurker or occasional poster who has joined the Board what would you like more of here?
To begin with, I would like to see all the pros on this board keep a fair amount (to be defined) of DT line aerialized.
Threads where regular mortals can post videos, and pros will post videos where they replicate the errors of mortals and demonstrate ways to correct them.
I guess I would like this site to be an interactive casting instruction site.

Hi Jarmo,
yes I'm keen to do that.
How much DT line are we looking at here? There are few guys here who can carry a 90ft DT to the backing knot. But comparing their stroke to someone carrying 50ft wouldn't be a good example because if they were carrying only 50ft they'd be using a different stroke. Maybe a video of a DT marked in 10ft lengths, with a few false casts in each (enough to settle the casting stroke). In fact that sounds like fun

Sexyloops meet for September 22nd... I'd try to plan to be in Europe for that... Farrah wants to go to the UK for the fall.
On the board, I think a lot of folks are just more interested in the low "energy cost" and instant gratification that Facebook provides... plus you generally get an echo chamber that validates your opinion, rather than challenges it.
Forums, especially ones filled with experienced folks, are more likely to force folks to think and defend themselves... which is not as desired in these "modern" times.
Meets are great; maybe some more how-tos (tying, some more casting, fishing techniques) that are clearly linked -> the older front pages had obvious links to some of the great content on SL and to the board, but it's cleaner now; I like the idea of a basic/or fishing / or troubleshooting casts section rather than a generic beginners section... something where the discussion can focus on some hints or techniques and where folks don't have to admit they still are or cast like beginners (like me).
Then again, I've been avoiding all unnecessary computer time, so I haven't been on the board much (I should spend more time here!).
Harps

I think sexyloops is by far the best fishing board available. I like the humor, members not taking themselves too seriously and the kind of already mentioned lack of "Which reel will work best with my new NRX 5 wt" "I think the Soandsoreel, because the red little accents match the rod finish and because of its fantastic brake"...
And of course the bundled knowledge about casting, which is completely unique. When preparing for my CI and MCI I read and learned a lot here!
That all being said I don't post let alone contribute much here... And I don't really know the reason why... (But I will thank Paul in a different way - by buying an instructor rod sometime this year). I actually catch myself reading more on the German board than here, where rather self absorbed retirees put up the most stupid fights imaginable - but it's entertaining...
To be honest I think boards like this in the future will either cease to exist or be little slices of heaven for very few people - the hardcore users of a certain sport or hobby... The vanishing internet neutralitiy will probably contribute a lot to that too... Today its either facebook and istagram etc - and it seems most people are satisfied with the superficiality these advertising platforms offer and are happy to give away their data in return for instant gratification in form of a 'like'; or big forums, blogs and influencers that make a living from advertising and "testing" the newest stuff - and they usually have a lot of unhesitating stooges doing additional work for them - by endless discussions which 5 wt is really the best - with or without knowing by just repeating the marketing set phrases or what yellowstone angler said...
In a perfect world Paul would make a living from his app instead of having to give his videos away for free to attract new users.
