OK. I"ve re-read the responses twice and my brain doesn't hurt as much. Until I am able to actually implement these different things intentionally and with skill, there won't be any light bulbs flashing. More things to practice. At least with my hours at work cut in half (pay too :( ), I have a bit more time TO practice.

My mentor said this about creep and drag
"As to creep, there is no significant line tension (rod bend) .... Drag pulls out slack and starts to tension the line with no or very little rotation. So very little change in casting arc. We’re getting in the weeds again."

I like the weeds, and there are no better minds to be in the weeds with than those on this board!

Drag is good. It allows you to save your acceleration/rotation for when it really matters ie late in the stroke. Also fits best with how we like to throw things. It’s the basis behind distance casts, and also roll casting.

Now where the definitions models clash, is that here at SL, Drag is part of the Stroke. It’s already begun. We are moving the line, we are getting it moving in the direction we want to send it. IFF have defined it outside the Casting Stroke, which is not very helpful.

But if you ignore all of that, modifying a casting stroke to include Drag allows us to delay rotation. That is the essence of distance casting. “Lead with the rod butt”.

For me it’s an intermediate/advanced level thing. I would probably introduce it (briefly) when teaching roll casts. But I really get into it with advanced distance. When teaching distance I often teach Drag using the Dynamic Roll to learn it - it slows things down and you don’t have to deal with the backcast falling or timing etc. (Not over grass anyway!)

I’ll draw some art tomorrow. Swinging around in my hammock at the moment so this is not currently possible :D

Cheers, Paul

I’m not sure you could sum this up in a thousand words...

Yes but art cannot be defined by \\\\\\/. It is about feeling and texture. The essence of knowing who we are. Expression through music and dance. Backslash backslash forward slash doesn’t and never will have the nuances that connect to our soul. But yes basically that’s it.

Incidentally I’m very pleased you don’t call your husband your “hubby” otherwise I would have to delete you from the Board.

I know you suffer for your art Paul, but why make us do the same?
