Good stuff Paul...
Roll casts are something I rarely practice... basically as i practice on grass, I can roll cast on grass fine but it doesn’t feel the same as water... too much slippage of the anchor makes it not that much fun. So I can do a decent bog standard roll cast but have never got into practicing the wider ‘d-loop’ family.

This afternoon I tried using an Al Buhr’s grass leader referenced in Jason’s book... much improved experience to practice with, it’s slightly too snaggy at the moment, but I reckon a bit of tinkering with the length of the tag ends will allow me to fine tune it closer to a water roll cast and then to regularly practice the whole ‘d-loop’ family for the first time.

I’ll still need to make time to practice properly on water, but more for fine tuning in real fishing situations, the new leader will def allow me to practice landing anchor points in different areas.

For anyone routinely practicing on grass i’d definitely suggest making up one of the leaders it only take a couple of mins.

Matt, tie your leader to a bottle of water and make sure you have enough line to form a small D loop. To practice, throw the waves down the line around the bottle, then off the other shoulder to take the loops off the bottle.

Matt,

Vince is correct; grass is good but you have to smoke it first. Then a luminous fly line and some chosen music. But we are still with the beginners tutorials at the moment. Advanced lessons are coming.

the ‘smoking’ will have to wait... I’m 2 weeks into another no smoking effort, give it a month and I’ll probably be back on it...

Single handed Spey casts are something I’ve only dabbled with, I don’t really use them on the rivers I routinely fish, but something I’d like to get to grips with this winter
