It's very interesting to read about casting but it can also be a bit frustrating not to understand all the abbreviations being used. Is it only I that don't know them all or does other people also guess sometimes? It would be nice if there could be a thread explaining at least the most used ones for us new here. I understand FC, BC and SLP: Front- and Back Cast, Straight Line Path. But for example RSP1 is something I struggle with understanding.

Hi Joakim

There are interesting documents in the articles section of the Sexyloops website (google "articles at Sexyloops"). Look for "The rod and the cast", you will find most abbreviations there.

Joakim,
You might want to check out the SL abbreviations topic on the old board for just such a list as well.

Hi all,
I had the same piffilus problem when I started to follow the forum and Ennio's definitions helped me a lot.
I have added to the list some other terms often used in many discussions and their meaning (!?) I found reading the forum, someone expert can check if they are correct please.

MCF = Maximum Counterflex
RSP = Rod Straight Position
RSP1 = Rod Straight Position after Unload
RSP2 = Rod Straight Position after Rebound
LSP = Loop Straight Position
MAV = Maximum Angular Velocity
CL = Chord Length
MCL = Minimum Chord Length
CF = Counterflex
MRF = Maximum Rod Flex
LBR = Late Butt Rotation
FC = Forward Cast
BC = Back Cast
CS = Casting Stroke
CA = Casting Analyzer
MED = Scientific Anglers “Mastery Expert Distance” fly line

POWER SNAP = A wrist movement at the end of the forward cast, (turn down your thumb).
DRIFT = Drift backwards with the rod tip after the 'stop’.
TRACKING = The bird's eye path of the rod tip during the stroke. The rod tip must travel from RSP to RSP with no right or left deviation. This is known as tracking.

Thanks in advance

Hi David, depending on the context CA could also be Casting Arc. Drift is rod repositioning between casting strokes using the SL definitions, and is not only backwards. Our definition of Drift is different from IFFF in this regards.

Tracking is interesting and I think it should be from a point of angle looking down the casting plane and not necessarily from directly above. For example tracking for a horizontal side cast coukd/should be from the side.

Cheers, Paul

Paul, I assume MCL and Max Rod Flex are just different names for the same thing. If not, what's the difference? Thanks.

Cheers,

I think MRF is redundant and was replaced by MCL as being a more accurate term. Not sure because I can't remember seeing MRF.

Cheers Paul
