Torque twist
A few months ago Merlin mentioned that he thought torque twist might be a form of pull back. It certainly feels that way!
I've been using it for about a year now and it's becoming ingrained. Has anyone else been working with this?
Cheers Paul

Not tried it myself. Similar in principle to this? http://www.sexyloops.com/movies/rotation.shtml
How are you anyway?

Yep, I use it often.
I'm waiting for the right conditions to get some high-speed footage of the rod tip while doing this so I can see what's going on. This Sunday is looking good.
(I'll also film tails tying knots in the leader. I've done this once before but was not happy enough with the results to post the video. Fascinating. )
Cheers,
Graeme

Yes but all at the end, I’m pretty sure now that it’s a from of pull-back. I’ve uploaded a few videos - I’ll dig them out.
And fantastic thank you

Paul,
how do you define pull back?
Can you describe torque twist as you perform it?
Thanks,
Bernd

Torque twist
Pull-back = forced rod unloading usually initiated by reversing the torque.
Torque-twist = twisting the rod around its axis during the casting stroke - in this particular case at the end of the CS.
I’m sure I describe this in a video last season - and have a video of it separately on Vimeo that was shot in Jakarta. I’ll have a look later over the weekend. Teaching tomorrow so much sleep now If I can’t find it I’ll shoot a video. Stu is here now so all is possible.

Yes I’m sure that it probably is what Al Buhr teaches. Dan MC told me that Al says it’s adding load through torque however which I don’t think is right, if anything it’s forced unload.

Torque twist
A wonderful fly caster who immigrated to Florida from the other side of the pond (Leslie Holmes) showed me something called a torque twist a few years ago. According to him, it is somewhat common in Spey casting on the forward cast and that it stiffened the blank.
Since then I have played with it on occasion when casting (single hand) for fun but never found a practical use while fishing. It takes a lot of practice to get it right and I never got to where I could confidently employ it.
Lately, I have introduced it into my back cast with, again, a suspicion that it might add a slight improvement. My goal on the back cast was to bring the bicep into play by simultaneously flexing it while supinating the wrist. The fact that it seems to introduce that torque twist effect on the blank was an afterthought.

With appreciation and apologies to Ray Charles…
