Lasse and Stoats are current examiners. So after this conversation it’s prety obvious that the Examination Board has changed what they examine. They’re all on one page now as it should be. I’ll clarify at the end of the month.

This is “Rodney”. I shall take him out this afternoon and film some translation only casts. Rodney is very excited to be cast again.

Nice Paul. Can you do it with a softer stop?
Don’t bang it on the edges. All the wobbling distracts a bit from the actual thing you are trying to show.

Hi Bart,

It’s impossible to damp the rod with the rod attached to the machine. It says quite a bit about rod damping but that’s another discussion. You should see the problem (and solution) that Bruce and Noel went through with their mechanical robot!

Interesting stuff Paul but before we look at translation, we should take a closer look at Rodney, he appears to have strong tailing tendencies.

Watching your video, it appears that the “tails” are on the back cast only but there seems to be some nice underslung loops on the forward cast, so it seems that the translation isn’t the problem. I’m with Bart, your stop is the problem, try sticking a big lump of high density foam in the back and maybe smoke something calming before your next test so that you can reduce rate of the acceleration and bring Rodney to a controlled stop. He’s going at it like a sailor with a hooker who charges by the minute.

The loops tail both directions. The stop on the forward is far more abrupt because there is a stopping block. On the backcast I stop with the hand only. Because there is no damping between the rod handle and the machine the rod shocks. That’s a whole other conversation. Bruce’s machine had a double motion instead of a stop to damp the rod. The hand or body must do this. But that doesn’t look at all like how we cast!
