I've just read this in 'the loop':
Tip: To demonstrate the tailing loop that appears only in the
leader on a fifty or sixty-foot cast, try this method. Make a straight
fifty-foot cast with a fairly tight loop and punch the line with your
thumb at the very last instant before you stop the rod tip.
The more subtle the punch of your thumb, the less it will tail.
The later in the stroke and closer to the stop of the rod, the later in
the line or leader it will appear. Practice will allow you to make the
tail appear early or late in the demonstrated cast
To me this is wrong - if I want to tail in the leader I'll put a subtle power application error right at the start of the stroke. My observations of unintentional tails also bolsters this feeling.
If I want a big, ugly, early tail then I'll put the power spike in very late.
James

It is wrong... Then again it took almost two years to change the mind of the moderator of the MCI group who thought similar.
A tail that happens late in the cast, almost when its done unrolling, has been put in there right at the beginning of the stroke, a tail that shows itself right away, has been done at the end of the stroke, where force is highest.
Think of doing mends, they travel in the opposite leg to the tail, and thus happens in reverse order. Travel far it needs done right at loop formation, dumped right under the tip, done when the line has straightened..
I can demo the different places for tails, just takes a bit of practice
Oh and Aitor, Alejandro and Mark did a great demo, in high speed clips... Its on vimeo..
Love the straight path of the rodtip intro too, beadchains are so not useful for understanding what happens
Cheers
Lasse

Flycasting, so simple that instructors need to make it complicated since 1685

Sounds like a religion - are they going to track down that heretical Spaniard and burn him at the stake?
Cheers, James.

I found it odd (at best... ) a couple of things about that article:
1) The in your face attitude towards Aitor. Why? Why not a friendly tone that invites discussion. Pissing on bead chains as they did just makes them rusty...
2) That their studies were not documented within the article. Claims need supporting information.
3) That casters/students should be tilting their necks searching for a tip and it's path. In slo-mo video, sure. In real time, no way. What you see is the evidence, the line directly behind the tip.

The mend part is a nice way to explain this! I'm not sure how they got this backwards in the loop....is it in a very old one? I don't see Eric agreeing with that at all and Mack just wrote in the new loop about how bead chains are useless too!

James, which one was this in? We need to challenge it in a new article and point it all out nicely....maybe even with some of Lasse's slomo videos attached.....I can work on it soon....James9118 wrote:I've just read this in 'the loop':
