Not 1:1, but the leader must be lighter than the line by only a small amount. It must also have a similar stiffness. These two things together will help the loop transfer smoothly into the leader.

A similar stiffness is not important.

Tapered, furled leaders made from e.g. Dyneema are very limp and stretch excellently.

The right distribution of mass is important

Hi Lou,

It would be interesting to know the tip diameter of the flyline. I used a 5WT MED for my FFF exams. I can see why you might need a thicker butt section with a heavier fly line. Mind you if I’m going to putt a knot in the Leader anywhere near the end of the fly line then I’m just going to build the complete leader myself!

Tip diameter of fly line 0.037 in.

Butt diameter of leader section I added to minimize the transition
from fly line tip to my leader, 0.029 in.

Butt section length I added 17 inches.

Knotless butt diameter of RIO leader 0.025 inches.

I do have one knot, joining the knotless leader to my 17 in new butt section.

BTW, I use a dial micrometer to measure my line diameters.

Blimey, I can't do inches that small! It's weird 17 inches no problems, in fact tell me that in cm and I'll have to convert to inches! But 0.025 of an inch completely baffles me

I have a set of callipers in my kit; it's an essential item really.
